What to bring and how to choose the perfect trail to enjoy with your dog
Trekking with your dog can be a wonderful and rewarding experience for you and your furry friend. However, it requires careful planning to ensure you both enjoy the adventure safely and comfortably.
What to bring
Before you set off, make sure you are well-prepared with everything you need for a safe and enjoyable hike. Bring plenty of water for both of you, using portable and lightweight bowls for convenience during breaks. Don’t forget to pack your dog’s food and snacks; hikes can be strenuous, and your friend will need the extra energy.
A sturdy leash and a comfortable harness are must-haves. Consider using a hands-free leash that you can secure around your waist, which allows you to keep your hands free for trekking poles.
Remember to bring biodegradable waste bags to pick up after your dog and keep nature clean. It’s also wise to carry a small first aid kit, including essentials like bandages, disinfectant, and tweezers. If the terrain is rough or hot, booties can protect your dog’s sensitive paws. Additionally, a towel or blanket can be handy for cleaning your dog or providing a comfortable resting spot during breaks.
How to choose the trail
Choosing the right trail is essential for a positive hiking experience with your dog. Consider your dog’s fitness level, health, breed, age, and physical condition.
If it’s your first time hiking with your dog, start with short and easy trails to help them gradually acclimate to hiking. Always check the rules of the park or nature reserve; some areas have specific regulations regarding dogs, so ensure they are allowed and familiarize yourself with local laws.
Especially during summer, opt for shaded trails to help keep your dog cool and avoid routes that are overly exposed to the sun. Be aware of natural hazards like snakes, insects, or poisonous plants along the trail. Additionally, choose trails with access to natural water sources where your dog can drink and cool off.
And of course, don’t forget your trekking poles! We recommend poles with Wired technology like IBEX or FR-3 EF LITE. They are easy to pack in your backpack, taking up very little space, and can be quickly deployed when needed. This way, you can carry and use them when necessary, storing them away just as easily.
Now, all that’s left is to enjoy the adventure!
